Circuit Bending is oorspronkelijk een Amerikaans muziekbeweging waarbij de makers het elektronisch systeem van speelgoed zoals een Furby of een Casio synthesizer zo aanpassen dat er merkwaardige piepjes en bliepjes uit komen. In Europa is Luikenaar Xavier Gazon een pionier van dit circuit bending. De optredens van zijn Playboy’s Bend zijn niet alleen een auditief maar ook een visueel spektakel.

Get ready for the second edition of the BEMF, the Brussels Electronic Music Festival because the line-up is again mouthwatering. The ‘E’ in the BEMF stand for ‘Electronic’, but the BEMF is so much more than just electronic music. It’s a three day party at Bozar with live music, nocturnal dj-sets but also large-scale concerts in the Henry Le Boeuf room. Amoureux de musique électronique, c'est reparti pour un tour. Les Beaux Arts accueillent pour la deuxième année consécutive, un festival électro fait de lives, soirées, showcases et véritables concerts de musiques électroniques.

Plus de 40 artistes seront réunis pour 3 jours de concerts et représentations en tous genres, dans 5 salles du Palais des Beaux Arts. Et cette année une collaboration avec le Recyclart, pour une PartyHarders Night, a été mise sur pied afin d'étendre petit à petit le BEMF à d'autres lieux culturels bruxellois.

Le but étant à long terme, comme l'explique Darko (DJ Belge et instigateur du BEMF), de " doter Bruxelles d’un festival électronique qui soit respecté sur la scène internationale, comme peuvent l’être ceux qui se tiennent au Canada, en Espagne ou en Allemagne. Le désir est d’être à la pointe et malgré tout différent."

Grosses têtes d'affiches, Hexstatic, Chris De Luca, James Holden, Cluster..., représentant les 4 grands courants de la musique électronique (electronica, Krautrock, techno minimale et la musique expérimentale), mais aussi vitrine de présentation de la scène électro belge, le BEMF rempile et c'est du lourd!

Hexstatic is a UK music duo, consisting of Stuart Warren Hill and Robin Brunson, that specializes in creating "quirky audio visual electro."[1] Formed in 1997 after Hill and Brunson met while producing visuals at the Channel Five launch party, they decided to take over for the original members of the Ninja Tune multimedia collective Hex that had disbanded around the same time. They soon collaborated with Coldcut for the Natural Rhythms Trilogy, including the critically acclaimed A/V single Timber. Much of their music involves integrated visual experiences, and both of their main album releases have been CD and DVD combinations; the latest, Master-View, includes 3D "anaglyph" versions of some of their music videos and comes packaged with 3D glasses. Hexstatic has also been instrumental in designing VJ equipment, including the Pioneer DVJ-X1 professional DVD player.[2] Other artists they have worked with include EBN, Juice Aleem and David Byrne of Talking Heads.

D-Fuse’s live Sonic Cinema performance Latitude
[31°10N/121°28E], is inspired by the notion of drifting
through the urban land + soundscapes of China,
following the emotive qualities of spaces that surround
us. Fragments of conversations, crowds, journeys,
lights, deserted space + architectural forms are mixed
in a unique live performance tracing a multitude of
paths, identities + influences, representing the everyday
life of cosmopolitan China.
Shot during a 3 month research period in China
[supported by the British Council and the Arts Council
England], D-Fuse have explored the rapidly changing
urban environments of Shanghai, Guangzhou and
Chongqing together with local artists. These journeys
have been documented utilising a wide range of audio
and visual techniques, and the materials drawn from
this form the basis for this performance.

Always pleased to play in Belgium, our heroic untamable genre-bender James Holden is joined by the primordial pagan beats of Luke Abbott's live show, and the future Moog anthems of an Avus DJ set as he counts down to the release of his next Border Community EP. Dan "the visuals man" Tombs will be our VJ for the evening.

L’an dernier, le BEMF (Brussels Electronic Music Festival) invitait avec succès la culture électronique au Palais. Musiciens d’avant-garde, DJ’s populaires et autres concepteurs de paysages sonores contemplatifs ou bruitistes se succédaient 3 nuits durant, offrant un panorama élargi d’un pan musical trop souvent caricaturé sous son aspect festif. Après ce test concluant tant au niveau artistique qu’au comptage de la fréquentation, voici la « première » édition du festival, comme l’explique Darko, le DJ bruxellois à l’origine de ces nuits de découvertes et de plaisirs.

Darko, quel bilan tirer de l’édition 2009 du BEMF ?
Avec le recul, c’était plus une édition zéro, un test, que les vrais débuts du festival. Mais malgré des difficultés dans le développement des opérations, ce fut une réussite avec 4000 visiteurs, ce qui est plus qu’attendu. Désormais, on travaille sur un projet de développement sur 3 ans. L’idée est de doter Bruxelles d’un festival électronique qui soit respecté sur la scène internationale, comme peuvent l’être ceux qui se tiennent au Canada, en Espagne ou en Allemagne. Le désir est d’être à la pointe et malgré tout différent. Un de mes chevaux de bataille est de proposer une écoute différente. Que des gens puissent écouter de la musique électronique assis dans des salles à l’acoustique irréprochable. Le BEMF ne s’adresse pas qu’aux adeptes du clubbing, même si idéalement on doit pouvoir combiner de la musique pour danser à des choses plus avant-gardiste, de l’art contemporain et de la musique concrète.

Est-ce une façon de rappeler au public que la musique électronique ne se limite pas qu’au « disco sur ordinateur » ; qu’elle est même née d’expérimentations menées par des gens comme Stockhausen, John Cage et Pierre Henry ?
La musique électronique a souvent été fustigée comme le fut jadis le jazz. Ce n’est bien sûr pas la musique du diable, jouée par des drogués pour d’autres drogués. Le regard des gens évolue avec le temps mais cela se fait lentement, car ce sont là des musiques un peu brutales, auxquelles on n’a vraiment accès qu’au prix d’une certaine ouverture. Les clichés ont la peau dure mais ne faisons pas l’erreur d’attendre 20 ou 40 ans pour finalement décréter que cela a malgré tout de l’intérêt. Aujourd’hui, un festival entièrement électronique, présentant à fortiori des choses plus pointues, cela reste une grosse prise de risque. Je trouve donc logique que cela ait lieu au Palais des Beaux-Arts. Ça correspond bien à la politique de création et d’ouverture d’un endroit qui a toujours poussé beaucoup de mouvements, de scènes...

Vous présentez cette année un très large panel d’artistes belges…
Erik Satie disait « je suis venu au monde très jeune dans un temps très vieux » et c’est un peu l’impression que me donnent Bruxelles et la Belgique aujourd’hui. Tant du côté de la techno pure et dure que de la musique plus expérimentale, nous restons un très bon vivier de musiciens mais la plupart n’ont aucun endroit digne de ce nom pour se produire, sauf à l’étranger pour ceux qui parviennent à s’exporter. Les gens de la nuit font du bon travail à un niveau strictement commercial mais leur offre n’est que rarement musicalement très intéressante. Ce n’est à priori pas mon job de fédérer une alternative à cela. D’un autre côté, une fois de plus, cela colle parfaitement à la politique de création et d’ouverture du Palais des Beaux-Arts que de soutenir de telles initiatives plus pointues. Je ne désespère pas que d’ici quelques années, le ressenti du public vis-à-vis de la musique électronique soit très différent, plus curieux et plus ouvert qu’aujourd’hui.

Tourner le dos à l’aspect festif ?
Je pense qu’il est normal de garder des espaces de fête, parce que c’est un pan conséquent de la musique électronique. Ce n’est cela dit pas le plus important. Ce qui est primordial, c’est l’aspect créatif et aventureux. La culture au sens premier du terme.

Vorig jaar nodigde het Brussels Electronic Music Festival (BEMF) het wereldje van de electro uit in het Paleis. En met succes. Avant-gardemusici, populaire dj’s, bedenkers van contemplatieve geluidslandschappen en andere Noise makers brachten ons drie nachten lang een gevarieerd muzikaal aanbod binnen een genre dat, omwille van zijn populairste en meest uitbundige varianten, vaak wordt gekarikaturiseerd. Deze ‘test’ heeft ons heel wat geleerd, zowel op artistiek vlak als wat bezoekersaantallen betreft. Vandaar dat Darko, de Brusselse dj die aan de basis lag van deze nachten vol ontdekkingen en plezier, liever spreekt van de ‘eerste’ editie van het festival.

INTERVIEW

Darko, welke balans maakte je op na de vorige editie van het BEMF?
Achteraf bekeken was het meer een nuleditie en een test dan de echte première van het festival. Er waren wat moeilijkheden en kinderziektes, maar ondanks alles was het toch een succes. 4000 bezoekers was bijvoorbeeld een stuk meer dan we verwacht hadden. Voortaan werken we volgens een driejarenplan. Het is de bedoeling om Brussel een festival voor elektronische muziek te bieden dat respect geniet op de internationale scène en gelijke tred houdt met gelijkaardige festivals in Canada, Spanje en Duitsland. Het is onze wens om tot de top te behoren, maar niettemin anders te zijn dan de anderen. Een van mijn stokpaardjes is het aanbieden van een andere luisterervaring, waarbij mensen al zittend van elektronische muziek kunnen genieten, in zalen met een uitmuntende akoestiek. Het festival richt zich dan ook niet enkel tot het clubpubliek, maar mikt op het combineren van dansbare muziek – van melodieus tot gewaagd – met klanken die eerder ontleend zijn aan de avant-garde, de hedendaagse kunst en de ‘concrete’ muziek.

Is dat een manier om het publiek eraan te herinneren dat de elektronische muziek zich niet beperkt tot het produceren van ‘disco op computer’? Dat ze zelfs ontsproten is aan experimenten van mensen als Stockhausen, John Cage en Pierre Henry?
Elektronische muziek wordt vaak scheef bekeken, een beetje zoals dat vroeger met jazz het geval was. Het is natuurlijk geen ‘duivelse’ muziek of muziek door en voor verslaafden. De manier waarop mensen tegen elektronische muziek aankijken, verbetert weliswaar, maar langzaamaan. Dat is niet zo vreemd, want het is een nogal brutale muziek waar je pas grip op krijgt als je de juiste opening vindt. De clichés rond het genre zijn hardnekkig, maar laat ons de fout niet maken om nog eens 20 of 40 jaar te wachten om er achter te komen dat de muziek wel degelijk belang heeft. Vandaag is het organiseren van een festival dat volledig gewijd is aan elektronische muziek echter nog steeds een riskante onderneming, zeker als het grotendeels focust op de meest avontuurlijke varianten van het genre. Ik vind het dan ook niet meer dan logisch dat het festival plaatsvindt in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten. Het festival beantwoordt aan het creatieve beleid en de openheid waarmee het Paleis tal van bewegingen en scenes een duw in de rug heeft gegeven.

Dit jaar staan er heel wat Belgische artiesten op het programma...

 Erik Satie zei: “Ik ben jong op de wereld gekomen in een erg oude tijd”. Dat is een beetje de indruk die Brussel en België me op dit moment geven. Zowel wat pure en harde techno betreft als op vlak van meer experimentele muziek hebben we een enorme visvijver aan talent, maar het lijkt alsof die muzikanten geen enkele noemenswaardige plek hebben om zich te tonen en te ontplooien. Behalve dan in het buitenland, maar dat is enkel voorbehouden aan zij die erin slagen buiten de landsgrenzen naam te maken.
Het circuit van het nachtleven levert goed werk op commercieel vlak, maar muzikaal is het slechts zelden interessant. Het is niet zozeer mijn job om daar een alternatief voor te vinden. En nog eens: het is net een van de sterktes van het creatieve beleid van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten dat ze dergelijke minder evidente muziek ondersteunen. Ik wanhoop dan ook niet en denk dat het publiek binnen enkele jaren heel anders tegen elektronische muziek zal aankijken, met een grotere nieuwsgierigheid en openheid dan vandaag het geval is.

Je keert het ‘feestelijke’ aspect van elektronische muziek dus de rug toe?
Ik vind het normaal dat clubs en fuifzalen behouden blijven, want het is en blijft een belangrijk aspect van de elektronische muziek. Maar het is niet het allerbelangrijkste. Wat telt is het creatieve, het avontuur. Cultuur in de ware zin van het woord.

Cluster is a German experimental musical group who influenced the development of contemporary popular electronic and ambient music. They have recorded albums in a wide variety of styles ranging from experimental music to progressive rock, all of which had an avant-garde edge. Cluster has been active since 1971, releasing a total of 13 albums. Musician, writer and rock historian Julian Cope places three Cluster albums in his Krautrock Top 50 and "The Wire" places Cluster's self-titled debut album in their "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire".

After a decade long hiatus Cluster reunited in April, 2007. They were selected to perform on June 15, 2007 at the opening of documenta 12, a major exhibition ofmodern and contemporary art held every five years in Kassel, Germany. In late 2007 Cluster performed at concerts across Europe and will return to the United States for the first time since their 1996 First Encounter tour in 2008.

Mike Faulkner – Creative Director D-Fuse

Being the founder of D-Fuse, Mike Faulkner’s career spans 20-years in the design and art worlds. Beginning in print design for album sleeves, his work has encompassed web design, broadcast production and video live performance. The D-Fuse DVD D-Tonate_00, released 2004, pioneered innovative use of interactive DVD features for audiovisual work, and led US musician Beck to commission D-fuse to create 26 films and the menu interface for the DVD release of his album Guero in 2005, as well as develop the visual live show for the Guero world tour. D-Fuse’s video installation Small Global has been shown at Eyebeam, New York, in 2005, and will form the centrepiece of the first solo exhibition of D-Fuse’s work at Mu, Eindhoven/Netherlands in October 2006.

D-Fuse's visual art has been seen + screened internationally at events including: Sonar [Barcelona], onedotzero festivals, Nokia Lab in St Petersburg + Moscow, Mori Arts Centre [Tokyo], Eyebeam [NYC], San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Prix Ars Electronica [Linz] the Rotterdam + Seoul Film Festivals, Lisbon + Valencia Biennales + Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival, Siggraph 06 Art Show, and many more.

Matthias Kispert – Creative Director Audio D-Fuse
Nationality: Austrian

Matthias Kispert is a sound artist, sound designer and lecturer, and has been working with D-Fuse since 2004. He has completed a BA (First Degree Hons.) in Sound Art at LCC under Dr Cathy Lane. His work focuses on conceptual sound pieces for projects developed in collaboration with artists working in other media, and commercial sound design with an experimental approach, with his sound design business WKSOUND. Besides this, he is a member of the live sound manipulation collective CrowdFormation.
Matthias Kispert’s work has been shown at the South London Gallery, the Tate Britain, Eyebeam [New York], Lothringer Dreizehn [Munich], and others. He is lecturing at the BA Sound Art at LCC and at the MA Interactive Digital Media at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication.
